Santa brought us a Wii for Christmas. Uno loooooooves the sports games that came preloaded on the machine -- so long as she's winning, anyway. If she isn't, then obviously her opponent(s) must be cheating; much screaming and stomping and hot crying ensues. This has given us the opportunity to teach her about good sportsmanship.
She demonstrated her tentative mastery of the subject last Saturday at the local high school's basketball game:
UNO: Is our team winning?
RCH: Well, no, we're actually down by 12 points.
UNO: Those bears [the other team's mascot] are cheaters! Can I go down there and tell them to be nice?
RCH: They're not cheating, they're just ... better basketball players. You need to stay here.
UNO: Oh, right. Right. Sorry.
After our team's loss, I made sure to point out to Uno the good behavior on both sides:
RCH: See? The dragons aren't mad because they lost; they're just going to try harder next time. And the bears aren't saying, "Ha, ha! Neener-neener! We win, you lose!" Everybody's shaking hands because everybody tried their best.
UNO: They're still friends?
RCH: Yes.
UNO: You mean the dragons still love the bears?
RCH: Uh, yes.
UNO: Aw, that's sweet! The dragons and the bears love each other so much!
RCH: Yeah....
LOL. :-)
