Grrrrrr

We're heading to my hometown next month for a quick visit, and on the agenda is a family portrait. I feel very self-conscious of my post-4-babies body and don't really want to be immortalized with my belly still looking pregnant, a year after the last delivery (which it currently does). I tried googling fashion tips this afternoon, and came across an article that promised Five Outfits to Disguise A Food Baby!

Except that it came illustrated with images like this:

super skinny model pretends she has a fat stomach magically made thin by sweatpants

Seriously? Seriously. I don't think that woman even has a stomach, let alone an ounce of fat. Grrrrrr.

And waaaaah.

Anybody have any real advice? I don't know what to call my body type; I don't think I'm pear shaped because it's not my entire bottom half that's big (I don't think), just my stomach. That would make me an apple, I guess, but then most apples are presumed to have a big chest and I, sadly, do not. It really is just this enormous 6mo-pregnant-looking belly I want to hide.

Ugh, it's all so depressing. And depressing that I care. But I do. :-P

I feel your pain. Its been a struggle with me lately with my weight but then again, should I let it define me? Anyway, I don't know if have any great advice about clothing but Stacey and Clinton (of What not to wear) say that you should always put the focus on your smallest part. Like for me, I would belt or something right under my chest around my rib cage where I am smallest. Does that make sense?

I would try some different things before your trip so you know what to pack. Look at it in the mirror or even post some pics on your blog for us to vote on? Just an idea.

Love you. Wish I was going to be there too.

Fashion is stupid! It's like when you flip through Plus Size clothing and they're all on size 2 models. If they turned around I bet their whole backside is covered in clips and clothespins to make everything fit.

I think you are having Liz Lemon issues, where you feel frumpy, but in reality you're hotness!

But yeah, I know the post- pregnancy tummy is not kind. I'd say try some Spanx? But I'm also a big fan of the corset for dressy times. Seriously! It squishes down everything unflattering, makes you have fabulous posture, gives you curves and an added bonus? Massive boobage. Because everything gets squished UP. :)

Sweetie, when you look at photos of your mother and grandmother - do you think "Man she looks so fat!" or "Why isn't she wearing any makeup?" Of course you don't. And your girls won't either.

And yes, Spanx are a killer awesome invention.

K2 - I love Stacey and Clinton but when I wear something there - people think I'm pregnant.

Dude. I am not afraid to admit that someone asked if I was Pregs and then told me to lay off the ho ho's. SO I am also no afraid to admit that I wear my BELLY BAND still. It sucks things in and looks like a tank top at the bottom. Makes me feel un peu more slim.

i will tell you one thing i've learned from sometimes pretending to fashion blog (ha!) -- mirrors lie, but pictures don't. so, try out a few outfits you like and then take pictures of you in them. sometimes things i think are super cute and/or flattering ends up being the opposite.

as far as what to wear -- i'd recommend maybe layers? i think layers can hide any flaws you aren't loving, like a post-baby belly (or in my case, just a big pooch that is not baby related). so maybe an embellished top with a cardigan and a cute a-line skirt? if you were out in utah longer i'd say lets go shopping before the pictures! but, really there isnt time for that *sigh*

or i was just thinking, a pretty, loose, flowy blouse with some wide leg trousers? you've always looked so good in wide leg trousers!!

i'm looking around online for some ideas, so i will let you know if i come across anything.

I totally agree that mirrors lie. I was amazed at what I learned once I started taking pictures of myself in different outfits at what I learned. It can really hone your eye so I would definitely give it a try with some different outfits and see what you learn. I sometimes even take pictures of myself with my phone in the dressing room to study and think about before I purchase later.

From my own personal experience with having a little extra weight where I definitely don't want it, I would advise to stay away from big and blousy. That will only make you look and feel even bigger. Trust me, so.not.good on ye ol' self perception when you're already feeling big.

That doesn't mean skin tight either, but close fitting that skims. And stay away from clingy fabrics. I would probably even stay away from wide leg trousers. When I wore those when I was overweight, I just felt HUGE. I felt skinnier when I had something a little more form fitting ~ not skinnies, but you get my drift, right?

Get a good, new bra that lifts the girls back where they belong. It can take the appearance of pounds off, I'm not kidding.

Anyway, I have more specific ideas but maybe I should email those to you instead.
