Okay, so remember once upon a time two months ago when I smashed my finger in the car door? The finger itself is fine now; I have even regained complete sensation in the nerves along the side. And yet....
All is not well in the Land of Fingers.
Ever since that happened, one side of the fingernail has been growing in the wrong direction -- away from the nail bed and the finger itself, like it wants to come off despite the other half of the nail still being firmly attached. It's odd and very creepy. But yesterday it got worse: Somehow it snagged on something, and now it really is threatening to come off. I've had it wrapped in a bandage ever since, but I'm still freaked out.
First of all, what if it does come off? That sounds like a bad thing to me! What is the evolutionary purpose of fingernails, anyway? My guess is to protect, um, the delicate and sensitive tops of my fingers. (DH isn't here or I'd ask him.) If the tops of my fingers are so delicate and sensitive, I don't want them exposed! I need my fingernail ON!
And secondly, what if this is a permanent condition? What if the nail -- or half of it, anyway -- has now been thoroughly trained to grow the wrong way? What if it falls off, and then grows back all convex and prone to repeated snagging and falling off? Am I destined to repeat this freakish cycle indefinitely?
Eeeew. And eeeek.
I wish DH were home.

I'm afraid we're going to have to amputate. Fortunately, you still have nine other digits to work with.
I was going to come on and tell you that "boyfriend" (aka Pherphy) says some stuff about damage to nail beds and fingernails falling off in this case is normal and they'll grow back...blah, blah, blah... but then I saw this comment up here ^ from "pootypootwell" and I am terribly curious to know who this person is as I call my other little brother "Pooty"! Is this some kind of conspiracy?
(Whoever you are, I love the handle!)
Oh, and I'm sorry about the amputation. I'll still love you with only nine fingers.
Tee-hee, Pooty -- that's what I used to tell my little sisters (and now what I tell my girls) when they got injured to lighten up the mood: "Welp, looks like we'll have to amputate!" LOL.
Mrs.M, that's what DH said when he got home yesterday, too. :-P But he dodged my question about the evolutionary purpose of fingernails; did Pherphy have any insight on that? I mean, don't you think they ought to protect some extra sensitive spot? Why else would it hurt so much when your nail breaks too low down, or if (*shudder*) you get a sliver or something underneath the nail? It's SENSITIVE, I tell you, and I want the dang fingernail!!
*Sigh!*
(BTW, Pooty is a fellow mommy friend that I met on a message board a couple years ago. So, while not Christopher in disguise, she is every bit as fabulous. ;-))
